Roots Revival

  • Centenary UMC • Winston-Salem, NC 646 West 5th Street Winston-Salem, NC, 27101 United States (map)

Lent is a season of self-examination, of learning how to be honest with ourselves, each other, and God about our shortcomings and our deepest needs. This year at Roots Revival, we are observing Lent with a series that takes us through the five senses: taste, sight, hearing, touch, and smell. The work of confession, repentance, and forgiveness requires and includes our whole selves, all our senses. And it turns out that there are many Bible stories about sin and forgiveness that tie in with different sensory experiences.

Using the music of Martha Bassett, Tears for Fears, The Who, and more, we'll explore some familiar stories of the tempting taste of forbidden fruit, a blind man given sight, a woman's miraculous healing, and others, all with an added element of worship that will directly engage the sense of the night.

Join us at 7:00 p.m. on March 8, 15, 22, & 29, and April 5, 2017; and don't miss Ash Wednesday on March 1 and a special Holy Week service on the tragic character of Judas on April 12. In the meantime, consider how you engage your spirituality and the world around you through each of your senses, and how God might use your taste, sight, hearing, touch, and smell to offer a different perspective on sin and forgiveness.
